The Village was asked this week what residents can or should do on the evening of a spraying. The District provided the following response:
“The EPA regulates the products we use to be safe when used as directed in outdoor residential/recreational areas. Additionally, the toxicity is very low in that it is unlikely to even affect populations of any insects larger than mosquitoes that are active at the time and not at all for insects not active, including bees. The mist disperses shortly after being sprayed to about a shot-glass to an acre and breaks down fairly quickly, especially once the sun comes out. Those who wish to limit/avoid any potential exposure would be recommended to stay indoors and close windows evenings when spraying is conducted, though adverse effects from exposure are rare and unlikely, especially at the levels the spray is used. We do also try to shut off the spray when we see any people outdoors as we spray as a courtesy and precaution. As adult mosquito spraying is only scheduled when vector mosquito numbers and the rate WNV has increased to levels where human transmission is of increased concern, limiting the amount of activity outdoors is recommended in general on nights of spraying.”
The District also encouraged the following: "To limit risk of West Nile Virus infection, when possible, avoid outdoor activities around dusk. If not possible, wear shoes, socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Loose fitting, light colored clothing is best. Appropriate use of insect repellents per manufacturer’s instructions is recommended (DEET is most recommended)."
