Nicor Gas is currently launching the Meter Modernization program throughout the more than 650 northern Illinois communities we serve. The Meter Modernization program is one of several investments NicorGas is making to modernize and improve how we measure and collect customers' natural gas usage, ensuring every customer's energy needs are met safely and reliably now and well into the future. Residents will or have received notices from NICOR about the project.  

More About the Program

Meter Modernization involves installing small, two-way communication devices on existing natural gas meters throughout Nicor Gas’ service territory – meters will not be replaced. These two-way communication devices feature state-of-the-art technology that will automate the meter reading process by collecting natural gas usage information and securely sending it to Nicor Gas. 

  • Timely and accurate billing – When activated, the device will automatically send meter readings to Nicor Gas. Bills will be based off actual usage each month, helping to eliminate estimated bills. 
  • Greater insight into energy usage – This automation will allow you to access more granular data about your energy usage to help you manage your costs. 

Nicor Gas’ new ability to read meters without the need for a field visit will also simplify the process for customers moving to new properties and reduce the expense and environmental impact of service vehicles on the road.

Preparing for the Installation Process

If your natural gas meter can be safely accessed, you do not need to be present for the installation.  There will be no interruption to your natural gas service during installation. 

Installations will be completed by a qualified contractor, 3P Utility Services - Tribus Services, working on behalf of Nicor Gas.  3P Utility Services - Tribus Services will have appropriate identification. If you need special assistance or have questions, their contact number is (833) 410-9592

The installation will take 10-15 minutes with no interruption to service.  Please ensure there is nothing blocking safe access to the meter, such as locked gates or doors, dogs or any other obstruction. 

If you have an indoor meter, or typically have to be present when a meter reader or other Nicor Gas employee accesses your meter, you will need to be present to allow the installer to access your meter.  You will be contacted to set up an appointment at your convenience.
